Open Core – GalleyForge Core Engine

GalleyForge consists of an open core (GalleyForge Core) and additional Pro features for publishers and journals. The core is available as an open-source project on GitHub and demonstrates how manuscripts are analysed and turned into HTML articles.

Open-source core

The core engine (parser, basic figure detection, HTML renderer) is available as open source and can be used and extended by universities, developers and open-access initiatives.

Transparent processing

The open core makes it transparent how manuscripts are structured (sections, headings, figures). This supports trust, auditability and long-term maintainability.

Example workflow

The repository includes an example manuscript, dummy figures and a template. A single command generates a complete HTML galley from these inputs.

Pro features

On top of the open core, GalleyForge Pro adds services such as Crossref/PubMed export, journal-specific themes and a 24-hour conversion service for accepted manuscripts.

Why GalleyForge?

Many scientific journals, particularly small society journals and university presses, still rely on manual formatting processes. Accepted manuscripts are often structured by hand in Word or InDesign, leading to inconsistent layouts, long production times and significant editorial workload.

GalleyForge addresses this structural problem by automating core steps of the production workflow: section detection, figure placement, metadata extraction and HTML generation. The engine is lightweight, transparent and designed specifically for journals with limited technical resources.

Open source as a foundation

The core components are open source to ensure transparency, auditability and long-term sustainability. Editors and university IT teams can inspect or extend the core engine without being tied to a specific vendor. The open core also enables collaboration with the broader scholarly publishing community.

GalleyForge Pro for production use

The commercial tier builds on the open core and adds practical publishing features: Crossref and PubMed XML export, multi-journal theme packs, PDF integration and a 24-hour conversion service. This approach allows journals to benefit from an open, inspectable foundation while still receiving professional production output.
